A bedroom for two children: four ways we have done it

Two beds that disappear into the wall by day, leaving room to play and do homework. Examples from real rooms, with project numbers.

When two children share a room, two ordinary beds take up most of it. Below are four solutions we have built many times. Each one comes with a real project and its photos; give the project number to our manager and they will show you how to do something similar in your home.

1. Two vertical beds with armchairs or sofas in front

The beds stand side by side with a shelving column between them. By day there is an armchair or a sofa in front of each bed; at night the bed comes down over it.

Project no. 1270 has two 90 × 200 beds, each with a soft armchair. Between them is a large toy console on castors that rolls out of the column. In project no. 822 the sofas have storage under the seats for pillows and bedding.

2. A bed and a desk each

The desk sits on the front of the bed. A child does homework at it during the day; at night the bed comes down and the desk stays level, notebooks and all. That is how our TANGO model works.

Project no. 585 has two single beds, each with its own desk and a reading lamp on a flexible arm. In project no. 1105 we mixed the two: one bed with a sofa, one with a desk, on a 3.8 m wall.

3. A folding bunk bed

For a narrow room there is 2EASY: two beds one above the other that fold up into a single panel. Closed, it sticks out only 31 cm from the wall. Each bed comes down on its own, and the top one has a metal ladder. The mattresses are 190 × 90 and 190 × 80 cm.

4. Horizontal beds

If the free wall is under a window, or the ceiling is low, the beds can fold along the wall instead. Closed, they are low panels you can put things on. Project no. 297 has two horizontal 140 × 190 beds, one of them behind a sofa.

Worth thinking about

Children grow. A 90 × 200 bed will still do for a teenager, so there is little point in a shorter one. Cupboards above the beds are a good place for out-of-season things. And a socket with USB in the column between the beds saves you from extension leads on the floor.
