Furniture for series 143 flats: projects for one-room and three-room flats

If you live in Chișinău, you have almost certainly been in a series 143 flat, and you may well live in one. These are the nine-storey panel blocks whose panels came from the city's concrete plant No. 3. There are three flats on each landing, and the blocks stand in every sector of the city: Ciocana, Botanica, Buiucani, Râșcani.

What the series 143 layout is like

It is counted among the most comfortable of the Soviet standard flats. A one-room flat has about 39 m² in total, a room of about 18 m², a kitchen of more than 8 m² and a large hall. A three-room flat has one room of about 18 m² and two of 10–11 m². The rooms are separate and close to square. No wonder there are so many on the market: in a 2016 study by the Technical University of Moldova, series 143 was the most common type among listings of standard one-room flats for sale in Chișinău, 27% of all offers.

The catch is that the inner walls are reinforced concrete panels 160 mm thick. Replanning such a flat is hard, so space is won with furniture: a bed that folds into a cupboard by day, a table that opens only for dinner.

Where these projects come from

A few years ago our designer drew projects for series 143 flats: two one-room flats (one of them in two options) and every room of a three-room flat. The pictures are renders, not photos of finished flats. The wall beds and the transforming table in them are models we make at our factory in Chișinău; the armchairs, chairs and decor are there as an example. Each room has a day view, a night view with the bed open and a plan from above.

One-room flat, a room of about 12 m²

The tightest option. A row of cupboards runs along the long wall: open shelves on the left, a wardrobe on the right, and a wall bed with a sofa in the middle. By day a coffee table stands in front of the sofa and lifts to dining height. In the evening the table is moved aside, the bed comes down over the sofa and the room becomes a bedroom. For this we make CITY, a wall bed with a built-in sofa.

One-room flat, a room of about 18 m²: living room and bedroom

A double wall bed stands against the wall with a corner sofa in front of it. There is a desk by the window, and a black wardrobe and a bookcase by the door. The white coffee table on castors opens into a 160 × 80 cm dining table, 74 cm high. In the renders it has four chairs around it, with more room on the sofa. At night the bed comes down over the sofa. Models: CITY and the TABLOID 3 in 1 transforming table.

One-room flat, a room of about 18 m²: an office for two

A long desk with two workplaces runs along the window. The wall bed is hidden in a wall of cupboards, next to open shelves and a section for clothes, and the sofa stands on its own by the opposite wall. By day the room is an office and a living room; at night the bed opens in the space between the desk and the sofa. The right model here is COMPATTO, a wall bed without a sofa that can have cupboards and shelves beside it.

Three-room flat: the living room

Two options. In the first, a double bed with a sofa stands against the wall with a bookcase and a wardrobe at its sides, and the TV and a small desk are on the other wall. In the second the bed sits between two bookcases, with a corner sofa in front of it. By day it is an ordinary living room, at night a bedroom for the parents or for guests. Models: CITY and KOSTAS, which has shelves and storage built into its cabinet.

Three-room flat: the bedroom

The room is long and narrow. A wall bed with a wooden front stands on the wall facing the window, a sofa runs along one wall, the TV hangs on the other and a desk sits by the window. While the bed is closed you can walk freely through the room. Model: COMPATTO.

Three-room flat: the children's room

Two options again, and both have the folding bunk bed 2EASY BUNK BED against the wall. Closed it is only 31 cm deep; at night it gives two single beds, one above the other, and by day the middle of the room is free for play. The first option has a small desk and a sofa by the window, the second a homework desk for two along the wall and a bookcase. More ideas are in the article "A bedroom for two children".

Common questions

Will a wall bed fit in a series 143 room? Yes. Closed, a vertical wall bed takes 45 cm of depth at the wall; open, it reaches 2.25 m from the wall.
